apple picking

while home this past weekend, i wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to go apple picking. my mom and i drove north about an hour to a quaint little apple orchard in cherry valley (side note: who wouldn't want to live in a town called cherry valley?). we grabbed a wagon and ventured out into the rows of apple trees to do our picking. we ended up with four bags of cortland's, which are a family favorite.

apparently, my mom is kind of an expert at this. she knew exactly where to go on the trees to find the best apples. i decided to demote myself to "bag holder" while she worked hard on filling them. we also left with cinnamon sugar apple cider donuts. umm...yes.

fall, please make your way over to north carolina in a timely manner. i'm ready for you!

  4. I'm going apple picking Friday! I've never done it before though. I'm wondering though, if you buy more than a bag full for a family what do you do with them all? Surely they would go bad before you eat them all. I guess I should think about making pies and such.

  13. I love this! I've been desperately searching for an apple orchard to go picking at this fall, but I don't think we have any near us. I'll just have to live vicariously through posts like this, I suppose :)

  16. You're making me super nostalgic - my husband and I lived in Boston for our first three years of married life and every Fall we would go apple picking at cutesy orchards, eat apple cider doughnuts and drink apple cider.

Now I must go hunt down some orchards. Surely somewhere in Wyoming or Colorado has an orchard...maybe?

  20. This makes me think of years past when my mom and I would go strawberry picking. We never got to do Apple picking but it sounds like so much fun. I second your notion that Fall needs to head South - it's been cooler here in Alabama but still in the high 80's, low 90's. I'm ready for some 60's and 70's please. :)

  21. I live in west Michigan and our apple crop is going to be seriously low due to the crazy weather we had earlier in the year (too warm too early in the spring resulting in early growth and then frost hit) which is SO SAD since I love apple picking in the fall. All of our local orchards won't be having U-pick so I'll have to settle for grocery store apples. I'm glad to see the weather didn't completely ruin the whole midwest's crop!

  22. you're so lucky to live/visit in an area that really has seasonal changes. living in Southern California we don't get much of a shift in the weather to signal that Autumn and Winter are coming. we go to a local Cal State college to pick pumpkins and enjoy a "harvest" fest in the middle of 90 degree weather, but that's about as seasonal as i can get out on the West Coast. thanks for sharing these photos so i could see how the other half lives!

  23. Every fall we try to go at least once to Edwards West Orchard. The apple cider donuts are a family favorite! We buy a dozen, and the bag is nearly gone by the time we get home! Happy Fall;)
